Rep. Cook Pushes Web Roll Call Votes
Santa Fe – Representative Zachary J. Cook (Lincoln, Otero) introduced a resolution (HR3) to provide for the posting of roll call votes on the New Mexico State Legislature’s official web site. Roll call votes include all the votes taken on the House Floor. The votes would be posted within twenty-four hours of the last vote being cast.
“In the digital age, a policy to post roll call votes on the web is long overdue.” said Rep. Cook. “Doing so would increase transparency in our legislative process and allow constituents greater and faster access to their legislator’s voting record.”
Previous attempts in the House have been met with opposition from Democrat state representatives. In 2007, the Senate passed a Senate resolution to provide for the same access Cook is proposing for the House.
“This should be a non-partisan issue about open government. It is my hope that those who opposed this measure in the past will embrace it this year.” said Rep. Cook.
HR 3 is expected to be heard in the House Rules Committee tomorrow.
